Dr. Spencer has transformed the way cataract surgery is done in the developing world. He has volunteered overseas with Seva regularly for many years and has both preformed surgery and trained eye care specialists in India, Nepal, Tibet, Malawi, Guatemala and Cambodia. He was one of the first doctors in the world to travel to India, Nepal and Tibet to set up eye camps in remote areas. He has voluntarily operated on thousands of cataract patients, transforming their lives by restoring their sight.

Others go as far as to develop NGOs that offer specialized training or skills to partner organizations. Dr. Strauss has served as an ophthalmologist and medical educator for over 25 years. He began international work in 1986 serving as a consultant for governmental and non-governmental international projects. Since 1997 he has worked to develop innovative techniques to address the problem of cataract blindness in developing nations and in 2005, he began his manual small incision cataract surgery training program. He has personally trained dozens of national and international surgeons in high quality, low cost cataract surgery techniques.
