Mission Details : MMI will facilitate a two week medical project in Arequipa, Peru from July 20 - August 2, 2019. Options available for one or two weeks commitment. MMI’s work in Peru began in 1999. Apart from the 1 and 2-week projects taking place, it has been possible to support the MMI Peru charity and its dedicated team of local staff. The city of Arequipa has a large number of public and private health centers, however urban slum conditions mean that many individuals still suffer from lack of access to basic services. This project needs a comprehensive vision care team including Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, Nurses, Technicians and Non-Medical Support Team Members. Vision care projects are focused in urban areas, and include opportunities for local medical personnel to receive training. These large projects typically see a high volume of patients looking for all types of services, including cataract surgeries. The MMI team will provide screening for pathology, surgical candidates, and refractive error. The optical component will dispense Rx and reading glasses to patients. The team will provide the patients with an opportunity to have access to surgery in their own community by contributing a small but significant amount towards their procedure. The team will be staffed with North American volunteers and involve local staff when possible. Teams work Monday-Friday. Participants make a project donation which covers all in-country expenses, including accommodations and meals. Air fare is extra. This is an excellent opportunity to meet and serve the people of Peru! Please provide your specialty or if resident your year of study when inquiring.
